One-stop shop portal for mining sector in Nigeria

The Nigerian mining industry, which remains a core sector yet to reach its full potential, has been beleaguered by the dearth of data on the various solid minerals available in the country. As a result, potential investors have little or no information required to make critical investment decisions.

Appreciating the necessity of an accessible data bank, on matters pertaining to the mining sector, the Federal Government, on Thursday, November 9, 2017 officially unveiled the Integrated Automated and Interactive GIS Web Portal of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.

Revocation Of Mining Titles In Nigeria

The primary legislation governing the Nigerian mining industry is the Minerals and Mining Act, 2007, (the “Act”). The Act vests power to administer the mining industry in the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (the “Ministry”).

The Act requires the Ministry to carry out its functions through its various departments and agencies. Accordingly, the Ministry, through the, Mining Cadastre Office (“MCO”), is saddled with the responsibility of considering applications for issuing, suspending and upon the written approval of the Minister, revoking a mining title.
